The Christmas countdown has begun...

This year Jeff and I have started Christmas early in our home. I think we've both been really excited for it because last year we were both so tired from having a new Wyatt in our lives that we really didn't go all out like normal...

So it first started off with our Christmas shopping--we're both done. And all the presents are wrapped. And the tree isn't even decorated yet. (And yes, we already got the tree...as of...yesterday.)

Then we went shopping on Black Friday. We were going to get a 40" TV, but unfortunately they were all gone by the time we got inside the store...so we settled for another new camera...which will be our present from Santa that we get to use early to document the holiday festivities of course. (And yes...that's ANOTHER new camera. If you remember correctly I bought one LAST Black Friday, but it broke in March and I had just thrown away the receipt the week before so I couldn't send it in to fix it...) THIS TIME I remembered to buy a home for the camera so it will be protected and thereby preventing harm:
My little man in his Sunday outfit!! So cute.

And here is our tree!! REAL, of course...I couldn't have it any other way. It's a lot smaller than last years, probably because Wyatt and I convinced Daddy that it didn't need to be the biggest one in the lot...we love it though. Decorating will begin on Tuesday for FHE.
Other things on my Christmas Checklist:
  • I'm going to start decorating the house this week...
  • I'm actually doing Christmas cards this year...

AND

  • Chirstmas music is being played in our house at all possible moments...

We've even got Wyatt sporting his Christmas thermal jammies...

We're SO EXCITED!! And it's especially fun this year because Wyatt will be able to somewhat comprehend what's going on!

Laughing Turkey

This was on Thanksgiving, after we had all eaten. Ginger loves to participate in Thanksgiving too, so we always give her some turkey. Wyatt was SO tired because he hadn't taken a nap and that's why I think he's being so silly...enjoy!

Thanksgiving

Sometimes it's hard to remember to be thankful and so I'm glad we have a national holiday set aside for that specific purpose. Last night I had Jeff write down a list of 30 things he is thankful for, and I did the same. I'd like to share our lists, written in no particular order...

Jeff's List of "Things I'm Thankful for:"
  • a beautiful, loving wife
  • that Rachael makes the bed every day
  • that Rachael does the laundry
  • that Rachael cares about cleaning the house
  • for a wonderful son
  • our health
  • for Rachael taking care of the bills
  • for wonderful grandparents/parents who are willing to help us
  • our jobs
  • that we live in America
  • for freedom to choose
  • for the Gospel
  • for a prophet that receives revelation from God for us
  • for a wife that allows me to go play sports
  • for all the time and effort Rachael puts into taking care of Wyatt
  • our home
  • for vehicles that function
  • that we're able to put food on the table every day
  • for friends that care about me
  • sports
  • for brothers and sisters who are willing to help babysit Wyatt
  • for the joy and laughs that Wyatt gives us
  • clothes to wear
  • for the unconditional love that Heavenly Father has for me
  • my mission
  • for leaders who helped me grow
  • for parents who worked hard to raise me right
  • for life experiences that have made me who I am
  • for Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for me
  • our temple marriage
And this is the list I came up with...

Rachael's Gratitude List:
  • Jesus Christ--I'm not the best at remembering to acknowledge Him in all my life, but I'm very blessed and grateful to have Him with me
  • Jeffrey--and all he does for Wyatt and I
  • Wyatt--and the opportunity I have to be a mother
  • Families--and my knowledge that families are forever
  • The Gospel
  • Laughter
  • Freedom
  • Good friends
  • Flowers
  • Vacations
  • Rainstorms
  • Our jobs
  • History
  • My mom's cooking (thanks for Thanksgiving!!)
  • Music
  • Love, hugs, and kisses
  • The ocean/sea-life
  • Education
  • Our home
  • Temples
  • Nature...being outdoors
  • Homemade buttermilk pancakes
  • The winter
  • Horses...and animals in general
  • Having our needs fulfilled
  • Nutella
  • Dark chocolate
  • Technology
  • Unconditional love
  • Functioning vehicles

We've had a very blessed year. It hasn't always been easy, but we've learned and grown through it all. We're very thankful for all we have, and we're especially thankful for our family and friends. We hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving this year and enjoyed your turkey feast!

I wish...

...Jeff liked to take pictures. But he doesn't. He makes fun of me when I want to take random pictures of the 3 of us...

... but we're cute, so he should get over it.

Intruder! Intruder!

My parent's have had chickens since I was in junior high, and today I decided to take Wyatt out to visit the coop and maybe check for any eggs. As we were crouching next to the chicken-wire door, I looked up at the nest box and couldn't figure out what I was seeing. It didn't take me very long to realize what it was...

A CAT.

Napping.in.the.straw.

Maybe warming a few eggs?

Either way, I can't figure out how she got in, since I asked around and nobody had let the chickens out of the coop today...meaning the door was never opened for Charlotte (the cat) to get in.

And she IS afraid of the chickens, so I don't know what her deal is. I called for her to come out and as soon as she jumped down she freaked out when the chickens started to surround her...

...I had to save the dumb cat from being pecked to death...

Wyatt's new toys

Wyatt has had fun discovering his new toys. Almost all of them make noise...and he loves it.
He especially likes shaking things...like these egg shakers

And of course he's got to get side-tracked and be mischievious...

...back on track, and shaking another toy. This Elmo toy talks every time he's shaken and his mouth opens...Wyatt thinks it's funny.

So much to do!
He got this walker from Grandma and Grandpa Downs and he likes it a lot....although it doesn't always fufill it's purpose as a walking tool...

Wyatt's year-old transformation

It amazes me that only a year ago today I was in the hospital, having contractions, and waiting for an epidural...and then FINALLY he arrived. It really seems like 'only yesterday' that he was born and we met for the first time. I have been so blessed to become a mother and learn and love the sweet spirit who is my Wyatt. He is a beautiful, healthy, perfect child, and no longer the tiny baby I held a year ago. I feel sad at the fact he will never again be so small, but I'm happy and excited for what the future brings for Mr. Wyatt. He makes both Jeff and I so extrememly happy and I'm so grateful to my Heavenly Father who has entrusted him to me. What a joy this past year has been!

Happy Birthday Wyatt!

Unhappily for Wyatt we had a doctor's appointment today and he received 3 shots (chickenpox, MMR [that's Mumps, Measles, and Rubella], and the first of his Hep A shots) and he had some blood drawn. From his arm...like when I get my blood drawn--tourniquet and everything. It was sad. And I'm sad he might be a little under the weather for his birthday, so it's a good thing we had his party already.

His stats for his 12 month check-up: Weight 21.7lbs (27th percentile) Height 28in (5th percentile) and his noggin is still above average.

Wyatt's Resume:

  • He has started to shake his head 'no.' And it's usually when he doesn't want something...but not always.
  • He is constantly talking. No real words yet, but he likes to tell us about everything.
  • He knows what I'm saying. For example, he has issues with pulling hair, and one night he pulled my sister's hair and wouldn't stop, so I flicked his hand. He was instantly shocked, started crying, and I explained why we can't pull hair. While he was still recovering, I told him he needed to give her a kiss to make it better. I leaned him in her direction, said "Give her a kiss," he opened his mouth and gave her a kiss. Cutest thing ever.
  • He's not walking. And isn't even slightly interested.
  • He has recently discovered bellybuttons while playing, "Where's your (name body part)?" And it's not really his own bellybutton he likes finding, but everyone elses'. He'll lift up our shirts and stick his finger right in.
  • He likes to watch channel 8 in the morning. His favorites: Elmo's world on Sesame Street, Super Why, and Sid the Science Kid.
  • He's no longer of formula!!!! HOORAY for whole milk!!
  • He's never had an ear infection (knock on wood)
  • He currently has 7 teeth, with a another one or two on the way
  • He's the cutest kid ever.

Early party!

Wyatt had his 1st birthday party last Saturday! He's not actually one until tomorrow, but we still had fun! We decided to keep it a small affair and only had family attend...we had a nice BBQ and enjoyed the fabulous weather.

Wyatt has a cousin, Lilly, who is 6 months younger than him, and they play really well together.

Wyatt had his aunts take him on the swings, which he loves:

Wyatt also loves food. Here he is in anticipation of a hot dog and potato salad :)

He also got LOTS of fun presents...
A drum and other loud instruments from Mommy and Daddy
A little tonka truck set from cousin Jacob
Another noisy truck from Aunt Meaghan and Uncle Lukas
A book from Aunt Emma
A walk-n-play from Grandma and Grandpa Downs
And he also received a block set, a sippy cup and bowl set, some hotwheels, and new church outfit from the VanCapelle family!

And then it was time for the cake.

I didn't make him any sort of fancy cake, but it was yummy. I thought it'd be good to give him a less-sugary option and not overload his system with sugar, since he's never really had it in large amounts anyway. I made him a pumpkin apple harvest cake with cream cheese frosting. And although the general consensus thought it looked not-so-appetizing, it was very tasty. I'm going to make it again, minus the frosting, just because it was that good. I also have to let you know that I have never let Wyatt feed himself because I know he makes a mess. And so because of this, he was expecting me to feed him at first...I kinda had to help him along and show him he could eat it, after he played with it.

And of course, a video clip for your viewing pleasure:

It was a really fun afternoon, and I'm glad we were able to pull it off. Planning a party is more stressful than I thought!! Haha, but it was good, and we were all happy.

Family Pictures

About a month ago we had the Down's family pictures taken by Brooke Harper. She did an excellent job and I think they turned out fabulously! I posted a few pictures of the kids a couple weeks ago, but I decided to share another few of my favorites. The pictures take FOREVER to load, so that's why I'm limiting it :) Enjoy!
